The Rebirth of a Classic: Nearly two decades ago, the notion of a “luxury SUV” was a contradiction in terms… but the Jeep brand changed that forever. In fact, the introduction of the Jeep Grand Cherokee invented the luxury SUV segment. Since then, the company has sold more than 4 million units in 100 countries, proving that this innovative performer clearly resonates with customers.

“The Jeep brand’s legendary heritage has made it one of the most recognized brands in the world,” said Michael Manley, President & CEO, Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “No other automotive brand today can say that it has consistently provided owners with a sense of freedom and adventure with the right mix of vehicles to safely take them where they want to go, whether it’s closer to nature and the outdoors, or maneuvering through cities and suburbs.”

It started with reviewing and evaluating the design, engineering and manufacturing of the Grand Cherokee. To create a new version of the classic Grand Cherokee, the Jeep Product Development team had to do five things:

  • Identify our customers needs
  • Pinpoint the areas that needed improvement over the previous model
  • Evaluate the finest competitors and determine their benchmark attributes
  • Consider what was best about the previous Grand Cherokee and determine how to push the envelope even further
  • Test the results

We were up for the challenge.

The Development Process

Jeep Quick Facts

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee was the first full new vehicle to have J.D. Power & Associates conduct consumer reviews prior to prototype builds.

We began with the upfront work. Customer focus teams provided invaluable “voice of the customer” input even before the new Grand Cherokee was designed. Grand Cherokee warranty information was thoroughly analyzed to identify areas requiring quality improvement.

New items were added to the “must fix for customer satisfaction” list to ensure that Grand Cherokee was designed from the ground up to have the highest quality. Customer touch points were reviewed throughout the entire development process.  And to ensure we hit our targets – and kept challenging ourselves – we even looked at independent research results.

Rather than wait until later in the development process, this research focused on customer satisfaction and perceived quality during early Grand Cherokee model development. We gathered and analyzed extensive data from competitive ride and drive events, and even conducted competitive product “tear downs” for greater product and design engineering insight.

Bringing it all together to build a world-class SUV.

The result was a comprehensive strategy designed to ensure that the new 2011 Grand Cherokee lived up to its classic heritage, targeting seven areas:

  • Legendary Jeep capability
  • Premium SUV on-road manners
  • Enhanced fuel economy and powertrain refinement
  • A sleek and athletic exterior design
  • A refined, well-crafted interior with premium features
  • Safety and Security
  • Connectivity/Infotainment

“Excellence comes through the execution of a well-thought-through plan,” said Doug Betts, Vice President – Chief Customer Officer, Chrysler LLC. “Our all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a solid example of a well-thought-through plan properly executed.”

Adjust your vehicle to the driving condition. Who knew the answer was so simple? Jeep did.

What do you do when you’re already a legend? Get even better. Since our off-road capability was already legendary, we improved upon it by creating the innovative Selec‐Terrain™ system, which allows the driver to choose the on- or off-road driving condition to achieve the best possible driving experience on all terrains:

  • Sand/Mud
  • Snow
  • Rock (including water fording)
  • Auto
  • Sport

Engineers also developed the Quadra‐Lift™ air suspension system, which provides height control and lifts the vehicle up to 4.1 inches from park mode to a best‐in‐class maximum ride height of 10.7 inches. Two additional inches of rear spring travel was also added.

Since customers choose four-wheel drive vehicles for a variety of reasons – from feeling safe when driving on snowy roads to off-roading through the toughest trails – Jeep  continues to offer a choice of three 4WD systems, one to fit every customer’s needs and every customer’s budget.

They are: Quadra-Trac I Full Time 4WD with a new single-speed transfer case, Quadra-Trac II Active 4WD and Quadra-Drive II with rear Electronic Limited Slip Differential (ELSD), both with the new two-speed full-time active transfer case.

Brake lock differential, brake traction control and a tight turning diameter of 37.1-feet continue to be part of Grand Cherokee’s formula for uncompromising capability.

Finally, engineers conducted approximately 5.25 million customer-equivalent miles for durability and reliability of the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Testing and validation in extreme climates and altitudes included road trips to a variety of locations across the country:

  • Death Valley, California (Extreme heat/extreme low altitude testing)
  • Yucca, Arizona (Chrysler Group LLC Proving Grounds)
  • Moab, Utah (Moab Jeep Safari – Extreme off-road testing)
  • Baudette, Minnesota (Bosch Automotive Proving Grounds – Low friction test surfaces, traction grades and extreme cold weather testing)
  • Morgantown, West Virginia (The National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium headquartered at West Virginia University – Flex fuel testing)

Durability of the structure was validated through state-of-the art fatigue simulation, an extensive battery of laboratory fatigue tests, road test simulations, proving ground tests and trips to the Rubicon Trail for Trail Rated testing. Grand Cherokee was also subjected to an equivalent of 100,000 miles/10-year simulation of corrosion.

In addition, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee has gone through more than 1,000 hours of wind noise and aerodynamic evaluations in Chrysler Group LLC’s state-of-the-art aerodynamic and acoustic test facility.

Jeep Quick Facts

In all, by the time the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee goes on sale, more than 7.5 million customer-equivalent miles will be logged by Jeep engineers.

A ride as smooth as a fine luxury sedan

A firm foundation makes all the difference.

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is built on a proven rear-wheel-drive unibody platform. The all-new body structure’s torsional stiffness is 146 percent stiffer than the previous model and stiffer than the BMW X5 and Toyota Highlander, for a better ride, improved durability and reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

“We listened carefully to our customers and the market,” said Scott Kunselman, Senior Vice President – Engineering, Chrysler Group LLC. “Our ALL-NEW Jeep Grand Cherokee hits the sweet spot of premium on-road performance and legendary class-leading Jeep capability.”

The all-new independent front and rear suspension delivers premium on-road manners and robust safety and durability performance with isolated front and rear suspension cradles and variable-rate rear springs.

This new suspension system provides significantly more refined NVH characteristics, improved handling control and the smoothest, most cushioned on-road ride Grand Cherokee has ever offered.

The birth of the new Pentastar™ flex-fuel V6

For 2011 we replaced the 3.7L V6 with the all-new lightweight and compact Pentastar™ 3.6L flex-fuel V6 engine, offering better fuel economy without sacrificing power. It is coupled with the proven W5A580, five-speed automatic transmission that includes adaptive electronic control which adjusts the shift schedule based on individual driving style, driving situations or road conditions. It allows the powertrains to feel responsive, without harshness.

The transmission also features Electronic Range Select (ERS) – a driver interactive manual control that enables the driver to select the top gear (limit the highest available gear), providing more control especially during off-road maneuvers.

Powertrains benefits are plenty… and impressive.

Pentastar™ 3.6L flex-fuel V6

This powertrain provides 290 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm, representing a 38 percent increase in horsepower and an 11 percent increase in torque. Fuel economy has been improved by 11 percent — to 16/23 EPA City/Highway (4×2 models) versus the 2009 model’s V6 (15/20).

Gas mileage is better than the Toyota 4Runner and competitive with Honda Pilot and Lexus RX350. Also, when properly equipped, the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee offers trailer tow capability of up to 5,000 pounds on models equipped with the Pentastar V6 engine.

“The all-new Pentastar is the most advanced six-cylinder engine Chrysler has ever offered,” said Bob Lee, Vice President—Powertrain Product Team.

As a flex-fuel engine, the Pentastar V6 can run on gasoline or E-85, a combination of gasoline and ethanol. And with its 24.6-gallon fuel tank, it has a driving range of 500 miles between fill-ups.

In addition to power, world-class efficiency, flexibility, and convenience, the Pentastar V6 has reduced noise, vibration and harshness significantly, improving a customer’s driving experience exponentially.

“Our all-new 3.6L V6 engine offers improved fuel economy, refinement and capability,” said Phil Jansen, Chief Engineer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler LLC. “Our all-new engine delivers better performance and the capability Jeep customers demand.”

V8 Performance – with fuel efficient MDS

Of course the V6 is only half the power story. Grand Cherokee continues to offer the best-in-class available 5.7L V8 engine with Multi Displacement System (MDS) and Variable Valve Timing Technology. Teamed with the 545RFE multi-speed overdrive automatic transmission it produces 360 horsepower and 390 lb ft torque @ 4,250 rpm.

The V8 makes more power than the competition. It also provides smooth, quiet operation, and excellent durability.

The Multiple Displacement System seamlessly alternates between smooth, efficient four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V8 mode when more power is in demand. This optimizes fuel economy when V8 power is not required without sacrificing vehicle performance or capability.

The V8 also allows Grand Cherokee to maintain its unsurpassed trailer towing capacity – 7,400-lbs on 4×2 models and 7,200-lbs on 4×4 (when properly equipped) models. For 2011, Grand Cherokee with the V8 with MDS also features a new dual exhaust, a first for a Jeep brand vehicle.
